The Expert Group on Non-economic Losses is one of the five thematic expert groups of the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism (WIM ExCom).
The work of this expert group supports the implementation of strategic workstream b) of the ExCom, which aims to enhance cooperation and facilitation concerning non-economic losses, including through improving relevant data and information on tools, raising awareness, enhancing technical guidance and catalyzing support.
Non-economic losses refer to a broad range of losses that are not easily quantifiable in financial terms and are not commonly traded in markets. These losses are additional to the loss of property, assets, infrastructure, agricultural production, and revenue that can result from the impacts of the adverse effects of climate change. For example, non-economic losses may affect individuals (such as loss of life, health impacts, or losses due to induced human mobility), society (such as loss of territory, cultural heritage, indigenous or local knowledge, or societal or cultural identity) or the environment (such as loss of biodiversity or ecosystem services).
As part of its current Plan of Action, the Expert Group on Non-economic Losses aims to foster existing and/or build new partnerships and cooperation with stakeholders working on non-economic losses. The questionnaire below contributes to a mapping of organizations actively involved in this issue.
