Join Five College Dance and UMass Fine Arts Center for a masterclass with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana on Saturday, April 20, 11:30am-12:45pm, at Totman Gym, UMass Amherst. This is a mixed level class. Free with registration through this form and open to the public.
Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana believes the universal spirit of flamenco - with diverse influences from Arab, Jewish, Roma, Spanish, African, and Latin American cultures - gives the art form a unique power to build bridges between people. This hands-on workshop includes a brief history of
the origins of flamenco dance, music and song and the various cultural influences within flamenco, along with instruction in
rhythmic handclaps (
palmas), arm movements (
braceo), body
posturing (
marcaje), and footwork (
taconeo).
What to wear: Clothes that are
comfortable and easy to move in.
Ideally (but not required): A shoe with a
sturdy wide heel (up to approximately 2 inches high). A full skirt with some weight to it, well below the knee but above the
ankle, or a comfortable (but not baggy) shirt and pants and
any sturdy shoe or boot with a bit of a heel (about 1 inch).
Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of America's premier flamenco companies. Based in New York City and Durham, North Carolina, the company seeks to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage; produce and perform high quality dance works; provide arts education programs that catalyze connections among young people; and nurture the next generations of Spanish dance artists and educators.
Please join us for a performance of the company's FRONTERAS at the Bromery Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 20 at 8pm. Please get your
tickets through the FAC box office.
