NSO Leader Application

All selected will be required to attend a training the week before Orientation and New Student Orientation.


The primary role of an NSO Leader is to provide guidance and facilitate Orientation activities and lead sleuth groups. NSO leaders are expected to learn the most important aspects of the college and of orientation to best facilitate positive interactions between families and first-year students. As representatives of Adams State University, Orientation Leaders are expected to be able to fulfill varying and diverse roles throughout training and orientation sessions. While serving as a friend and mentor to new students, NSO Leaders are also responsible for communicating and upholding Adams State policies as well as any special policies that may apply specifically to the NSO team.

By becoming an NSO leader you will be able to grow as a leader,receive approximately a $300 dollar stipend, be the first to meet the new students and welcome them. The NSO leadership class is a 3 credit spring course that discusses different leadership theories (all classes between the 12-20 credit range is the same price in terms of tuition).

The minimum expectations and responsibilities for NSO Leaders include, but are not limited to:
• Attending and actively participating in the training program and a spring semester course
• Working as a team with other NSO leaders and ASU staff and faculty
Participating and assisting with the organization, planning, and implementation of orientation activities-- These tasks include:
o Assisting in check-in of students, parents, and guests as they arrive
o Eating meals with students
o Conducting campus tours for parents and students
o Responding to student and parent questions
o Making contacts with students before, during, and after orientation
o Assisting with facilitating group discussions over issues that new students and parents may face during the transition to college
o Create everlasting friendships with the students and parents
o Ease the transition into Adams State University


There are different types of NSO leaders throughout the New Student Orientation experience. Each position has a specific set of responsibilities.
• Sleuth Leaders: NSO Leaders that work directly with the students and parents. These leaders participate and lead new students through the new student orientation process. Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
o Have a knowledgeable understanding of the NSO Schedule and Sleuth Rotation
o Be able to answer general inquires about Adams State
o Have a well rounded knowledge of resources on campus
o Be able to effectively communicate with new students and parents
o Prepare and execute group activities (i.e. Ice breakers and team builders)

• First Year Immersion Mentor: During NSO FYI mentors are expected to act as their FYI group’s sleuth leader in order to build relationships with FYI students from the very beginning of their experience at Adams State. These leaders will directly work with students and parents. These leaders participate and lead new students through the new student orientation process.The FYI Mentor position will continue until May 20th, 2019. Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
o Have a knowledgeable understanding of the NSO Schedule and Sleuth Rotation
o Be able to answer general inquires about Adams State
o Have a well rounded knowledge of resources on campus
o Be able to effectively communicate with new students and parents
o Prepare and execute group activities (i.e. Ice breakers and team builders)
o Have an extensive knowledge regarding their specialized department and content area


• New Student Orientation Crew: The NSO crew leaders execute the events of New Student Orientation. These leaders ensure smooth event flow and event management. Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
o Planning events
o Being a point person at events to ensure that event checklists are being completed
o Resolve issues that may arise during events
o Set up and clean up after all events
o Have a knowledgeable understanding of NSO schedule
o Have a knowledgeable understanding of event flow for NSO events
o Create and execute innovative ideas related to engagement and marketing
o Work with entire NSO team to ensure a fun and welcoming NSO experience
