I.              Theological Prologue 

We celebrate that all persons are created in the image and likeness of God and are called, through Jesus Christ, to be in life-giving relationships with God and other persons. As we live in these life-giving relationships within our congregations, we come to recognize and affirm that all life is contingent upon the grace of God. 

We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ is created to be one community with each member holding a significant presence and purpose. When any part of the community is injured, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or relationally, the wellbeing of the whole community is violated and all suffer. 

II.            Limited Access Covenant 

Leominster United Methodist Church affirms the dignity and worth of all persons.  We are committed to being a Christian community with “open hearts, open minds, and open doors.” It is vitally important that all persons in our church have the confidence and assurance that we are committed to preserving the church as a holy place of safety and protection for all.

We thank you for your disclosure of your history as a sex offender. This pattern of inappropriate behavior is a violation of our community’s covenant. Due to your history, we have genuine concerns about the safety of those with whom you come in contact in our congregation.  

The following guidelines are designed to reduce the risk to both you and the parishioners of an accusation or incident.  We welcome you to our congregation and our membership, but we need to limit certain aspects of your participation to protect you from future accusations and to promote the safety of others. We believe it is in everyone’s best interest for you to limit contact as defined below with children and adults on congregational property or at congregation-sponsored events.  

Within the following guidelines, the congregation welcomes your participation in and/or membership of Leominster United Methodist Church. We invite you to agree to the following: 

1.          I will not volunteer or agree to lead, chaperone, or participate in events for children and youth including but not limited to such things as Sunday School, children’s message, youth group, activities for children and/or youth during intergenerational events, or driving or otherwise transporting children and/or youth.

2.          Except for handshakes, I will refrain from all physical contact with parishioners, including hugging. If a person initiates a hug or other physical contact besides a handshake, I will refuse and step away.

3.          When inside the church building, I will remain on the first floor at all times and will not go downstairs to the basement level. 

4.          I will remain in groups no smaller than three persons. In other words, I will not be in a one-on-one situation with another parishioner.  Due to our close relationship, my friend Lynn Reichert and I will count as one person for this “rule of three.”  

5.          I will not come into the church building outside of scheduled LUMC worship services or congregational events without first calling ahead to verify that there are at least three people present (see 4). 

6.          I will periodically discuss this covenant when requested by the pastor or SPRC chairperson.    

7.          Should the accusation of a breach of this covenant arise, or should I have concerns about a member of the congregation interfering with my own ability to adhere to this covenant, either party should report to the pastor and/or the chairperson of the SPRC. 

I accept that the congregation, all future appointed pastors, and all future new members will be told of my circumstances in order to protect me and for them to protect themselves and the children/young people for whom they care.  

I have reviewed this covenant and agree to abide by its provisions.

I understand that this covenant will remain for an indefinite period of time.

Will you abide by the following drop off and pick up procedures? 

Drop Off Procedure

Our children's one-room Sunday School program is for all children age 0 - grade 5.  Children will attend worship with their parent or guardian at 9:30 am, and then be dismissed to Sunday School approximately 15 minutes into the service. At that time, a verbal announcement will be given for the children to meet their teachers in the Narthex at the back of the Sanctuary.  The teachers will escort the children to the downstairs Sunday School classsroom. 

Communion Pick-Up Procedure

On first Sundays of the month and other occasions on which Holy Communion is being celebrated, teachers will bring children back up to the Sanctuary in time to receive communion, and then the children will return to their parent or guardian's care for the remainder of the service.

Other Sundays Pick-Up Procedure

On all other Sundays, parents and guardians are asked to pick up their children from the classroom immediately following worship.  Families are encouraged to attend "Coffee Hour" (cold drinks and snacks will also be available) together in the Fellowship Hall after Sunday School and Worship.

Unless written permission has been granted by the pastor, parent/guardians are required to remain on church premises and should not leave for the entirety of the Sunday School hour.
