NEA Day of Service and Tours: Call for Volunteers
The Day of Service event, in conjunction with the Spring 2017 Meeting, is a chance for archivists to help local institutions improve access to important archival collections at their repositories. It's also a great chance to see what types of materials can be found in cultural heritage organizations on Cape Cod. And it's a chance to get together and meet new people!
On Thursday, March 23, work with your fellow NEA members at either Sturgis Library in Barnstable or the Bourne Historical Society in Bourne on projects that will help make their collections publicly accessible.
Training will be provided to volunteers at the start of each shift, and no prior experience is needed. Shifts are first come, first serve, and space is limited. Sturgis Library has two projects. One is encapsulating gravestone rubbings, and the other is indexing deeds that date from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Experience with encapsulation is needed for the former, and a laptop is helpful for the latter. Bourne Historical Society has a project to transcribe the town undertaker's diary.
Bourne Historical Society and Sturgis Library are also offering tours to those interested on that same day, Thursday, March 23, before or after your shift. (Photographs will be taken for social media, and by signing up to volunteer people agree to be photographed.)
We have a bonus tour to offer, of the W.B. Nickerson Cape Cod History Archives at Cape Cod Community College, which is also be available for sign up the same day. Please note that Sturgis and the Community College are about a 10-minute drive apart. Bourne Historical is about a 30-minute drive away. If you wish to do all three tours, we suggest you start with Bourne at 11:00, then do the Nickerson room at 1:00 and Sturgis at 3:00.
The deadline to sign-up is Tuesday, March 7th. Once each slot fills up the project organizers will email potential volunteers to confirm participation and share further logistical details.
Thank you for your interest in this community service project!
