DATE: TUESDAY, APRIL 15TH, 2025 for First Responders, Educators, Faith Leaders, Medical and Mental Health Clinicians and Staff, Crisis Staff, Peer Support, and Business Owners and Supervisors
TIME: 8:30AM-4:30PM MT (lunch provided)
LOCATION: Marbleton Town Hall, 10700 US-189, Big Piney, WY 83113
DESCRIPTION: Recent studies show that firefighters, law enforcement, emergency teams, clergy, educators, and therapists are increasingly being asked to assist individuals at risk for suicide, yet many feel underprepared. First responders are trained to assess risk and manage high-stakes situations, while educators are skilled in handling delicate conversations, but both groups deserve more tools for managing crises. Therapists also report reluctance in treating suicidal patients due to a lack of training, with less than 50% of mental health programs addressing suicide risk assessment. This eight-hour training, which includes didactics, discussions, videos, and skills practice, is designed to increase participants' competence, confidence, and comfort in managing at-risk individuals. Attendees will advance their evidence-based skills in risk assessment, management, and decision-making, helping both those in crisis and their peers who may be at risk.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Adopt language for suicidal people that is respectful and non-judgmental.
- Assist adults and youths with suicidal symptoms in a collaborative, empowering way, anchored in their values and priorities.
- Assess suicide risk in 8-10 minutes.
- Discuss ambivalence and reasons for living with individuals.
- Collaboratively devise a crisis response plan that may reduce suicide attempts by 76%.
- Provide brief interventions to de-activate the suicidal mode.
