For years, the See Something, Say Something program has provided individuals with a way to submit anonymous tips to school and district officials. Valparaiso Community Schools has transitioned to a new system, Say Something – Anonymous Reporting System (SSARS), in partnership with the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation.
SSARS is a research-based violence prevention program offered at no cost by Sandy Hook Promise, a national nonprofit organization. The program trains students and staff to recognize the warning signs of potential violence or self-harm and provides secure reporting options through a mobile app, website, and telephone hotline.
SSARS may be used to report concerning behaviors such as threats, harassment, or other safety issues. Students can submit anonymous tips through the Say Something Anonymous Reporting app (Say Something SHP), the website (saysomething.net), or by calling 1-844-572-9669. Students also have the option to share screenshots of concerning social media posts.
All tips are received by highly trained crisis counselors who take immediate action to assess the situation and ensure student safety. Counselors gather additional details and collaborate with school administrators and law enforcement, as appropriate, to determine next steps and provide needed support.
Students and staff may submit tips 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every submission is reviewed by a trained crisis counselor who evaluates the information and coordinates with the school response team. Each school and district has a designated Say Something response team that includes administrators and law enforcement personnel to ensure timely and appropriate follow-up.
