Pledge not to Donate to Yale until it Divests from Fossil Fuels and Cancels Puerto Rican Debt
By signing my name below, I pledge not to donate any money to Yale University until Yale meets the following demands:

1. Disclose all investments in Puerto Rican debt & instruct fund managers with investments in Puerto Rican debt to cancel that debt.
2. Disclose & divest all holdings in fossil fuel companies.

Yale profits off of climate destruction and the continued exploitation of Puerto Rico. It hoards its $29 billion endowment and often operates more like a hedge fund than a university. We envision, and demand, a University that instead invests in a just future for all. In light of the devastation which followed Hurricane Maria and the Trump administration’s climate denial, the time to fight for climate justice is now.

Together, students, alums, faculty, and New Haveners stand against the way that Yale claims to be committed to light and truth, but in practice prioritizes its own power, prestige, and wealth rather than the wellbeing of the New Haven community and the world. Yale-trained scientists, scholars, and activists fight for a just and livable future every day, around the world. But Yale actively undermines their work by refusing to divest from the fossil fuel industry and PR debt.

The Yale investments office is massively influential in the world of endowments, and hundreds of other colleges and universities across the country model their investments off of theirs. They justify their holdings in fossil fuel companies and PR debt through a willful naiveté that does not reflect the research created in this very institution. Yale should invest in the economic transformation climate change requires. They should challenge the ongoing colonialism imposed on PR by vulture hedge funds through exploitative debt. Their decision to divest from fossil fuels and cancel Puerto Rican debt would have reverberations around the world.

Students, alums, New Haven, and Puerto Rico are powerful, and we will hold this university accountable!
