Black Girls Achieve Scholarship

In honor of Black History Month, Black Girls Achieve is happy to announce our first scholarship for high school seniors entering their first year of college in 2026! This scholarship highlights the importance of literacy, education, and empowerment. We are so proud of Black girls' everywhere for continuing their education and standing on the shoulders of the greats before them. Winners will be awarded a $500 book award upon graduation. 

Deadline: March 1st

All applicants are expected to attend the BGA Summit in March, and the winner should be prepared to accept their award at the event.

Essay Length: 1-2 pages 

Requirements:

  • Must be a current CT resident 
  • Must be a current senior at a CT school 
  • Must attend a 2 year or 4 year college Fall 2026 
  • Must identify as a Black Girl 
  • Must submit a completed application and essay
*Responses that use AI or any form of plagiarism will be disqualified* 
Primary or secondary sources must be cited. 

Essay will be judged based on the following criteria:
  1. Organization and Structure - Essay is organized, easy to follow and contains a beginning, middle, and end while meeting the length requirement (1-2 pages). 
  2. Style and Content- Essay is structured cohesively and uses stylistic choices that adds depth, voice, and intrigue to the paper. Essay provides compelling evidence to support their perspective. 
  3. Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling - Essay contains appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation making the essay easy to read and understand. 
  4. Content and Sources - Essay cites sources when using direct quotes, along with primary and secondary documents as evidence.

Essay Question:  What is an important event in Black History that is not taught or highlighted in the current school curriculum? Why is this history important and what can students gain by learning about it? Please provide the timeframe of when the event took place, the historical context surrounding the event, key figures that were involved, the legacy and impact it made, and ways schools can incorporate this history.
