WSU IYSSE Annual General Meeting 2024

The IYSSE at Western Sydney University is holding its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 23 October. The topic of the meeting is the massive political crisis in the United States. We are holding this meeting to ensure the only club which fights for a socialist, anti-war perspective remains affiliated.

10 students must attend so that we can reach quorum and continue our work at WSU.

Register today and invite your friends and classmates!

WHEN: 1pm Wednesday, 23 October
WHERE: PS-EB.3.33A (CLS), Parramatta South Campus

At the AGM, we will elect the club executive and conduct other business required to remain affiliated.

We will then have time for a discussion on the critical political issues facing students.

With just three weeks until the US election, the population is confronted with the choices of Kamala Harris, a war criminal and one of the butchers of Gaza, and Donald Trump, a fascist gangster who has threatened to impose an outright dictatorship.

The election shows the decay and degeneration of official politics in the centre of world imperialism. Amid growing opposition, the population is disenfranchised, and the real power rests with Wall Street, the billionaires and the military.

There are tactical differences between Trump and Harris, but they are united in support of war. In addition to the US-NATO war against Russia in Ukraine and threats against China, they both support the mass murder of Palestinians in Gaza, as well as the war against Lebanon and the preparations for a disastrous attack on Iran.

This turn to imperialist militarism is an international tendency, which includes the Labor government in Australia. It has supported all the war crimes of the past year, and is cracking down on opposition. That is the significance of the violent police arrests at Western Sydney University itself, targeting students opposed to the genocide.

These developments show the need to build a socialist anti-war movement. That perspective was advanced at an important Special General Meeting at WSU initiated by the IYSSE on October 8. Those in attendance overwhelmingly endorsed the fight to build a socialist anti-war movement. A resolution passed at the meeting rejected the bankrupt perspective of trying to pressure governments to end genocide and war. Instead, it explained that the cause of war is capitalism. The task is to mobilise the working class against the governments and the profit system itself.

To take forward this crucial struggle, attend our AGM, ensure the IYSSE is affiliated and participate in this important discussion.
