The LIFE Program "Ecological services, social benefits and economic value of ecosystem services in the areas of the NATURA 2000 Network in Crete" (Acronym: "LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete") is being implemented by the University of Crete-Natural History Museum of Crete "- LIFE13 INF / GR / 000188).
The objective of the LIFE Natura2000 Value Crete project is to conduct an environmental awareness campaign for the population of Crete living and operating within NATURA 2000 areas and the wider population of the island for the environmental, economic and social value of the areas that are part of the NATURA Network2000.
The ultimate goal of this particular project is to highlight the valuable contribution of ecosystem services to the social prosperity and economic development for the local communities, to promote alternative - environmentally beneficial - economic activities and to cultivate skills of the local population so that they are actively involved in the protection of biodiversity in Crete.
Throughout the program an evaluation of its activities is carried out so that the awareness campaign adapts to the needs of the local communities. For this purpose, a research was performed in the form of questionnaires at the beginning of the program. Towards the completion of the project, this second survey is being carried out, which aims to make qualitative and quantitative assessment of the changes in population attitudes towards biodiversity and NATURA 2000 areas, as well as the evaluation of their desire to develop and support Environmentally beneficial economic activities as a result of project actions.
The project is co-funded by the European Commission / Directorate-General for the Environment by 50% and the Ministry of Environment and Energy (RIS), the Decentralized Administration of Crete – Directorate for Coordination and Inspection of Forests and the Hellenic Ornithological Society are in cooperation.
