Early Interest Form - 2016 BYU English Symposium
Thanks for your interest in participating in our Spring English Symposium coming up on March 17-18, 2016.

Fill out this form before November 1, 2015 and you'll be entered into a prize drawing for a $50 BYU Store certificate, an audiobook from Audible, or a complete works of Shakespeare!

When you tell us (through this form) about a possible topic or paper idea you have for our Spring symposium, we will be able to give you some specific guidance for preparing your formal proposal due in January, and you will be invited to prep meetings that will increase your chances of being selected to present. (You are not required to fill out this form in order to submit a formal proposal by the January 29, 2016 deadline. However, we recommend you do so in order to improve your chances of acceptance and success.)

This is our big event of the year, and we'd love for you to be part of it by presenting a paper or competing in our 3MP (three-minute paper) competition! Expressing initial interest is the first step.

Interests - Formats
Here we will explain our four formats and ask you which of them interest you. It is possible to participate in more than one of these formats. (We will ask you about topics you're interested in in the next section).
Research Paper Presentation
In this format, students read an entire (8-10 page) academic paper. Presenters are put into groups of three or four (called a "panel") organized by common topic, and sessions last about 90 minutes. This is a traditional academic paper presentation format. One may propose a paper individually or as a group (for example, several who took the same class together might propose a panel together).

3MP (three-minute paper) Presentation / Contest
In this format, students are allowed one PowerPoint slide and exactly three minutes to summarize their paper and their experience writing it in an effort to engage the audience in their topic and convey their own interest and enthusiasm. Preliminary rounds run under an hour and consist of 10-15 presentations. Unlike the research paper presentation format, 3MP presenters are not allowed to read from a paper, but can use index cards. The 3MPs are judged by a panel of faculty members, partly on the basis of content and partly on the basis of delivery. Winners of the initial rounds compete in a final round where cash prizes are awarded (including a people's choice award). It is possible to present the same paper as a 3MP and within a traditional academic panel if you wish.

Creative Writing Presentation
Panels (groups of a few students) will be organized by genre (short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, etc.) and each student will be given up to 15 minutes to read his/her work. Some creative writing panels will be made up of winners from various creative writing contests.

"My Story" Format (English+)
These presentations are five-minute oral presentations in which students narrate their "English+" experiences (they talk about how they have been able to apply their English studies in ways that give them practical experience and skills that will help them after graduating). Choose this format if you have had a successful internship, mentored research experience, service experience, study abroad experience, networking experience, or any other appropriate extra-curricular experience that would inspire others studying English and give them ideas for how to apply their English skills. This format follows the Ignite or "Pecha Kucha" presentation style (with exactly 20 slides that automatically advance every 15 seconds). See examples at http://bit.ly/MyStoryExamples

Topics
You may not yet have a completed paper, but perhaps you at least know the general topic that you may wish to present about. You are not committed to any ideas that you share here. However, if you do provide input here on specific topics it will enable us to connect you with others (whom you may not know) who share that interest, and we can provide you with more focused feedback on your developing paper or on your formal proposal.
Please indicate one to three general topic areas about which you are interested in presenting
(You'll get a chance to be more specific later on) (Applied English/English+ is not included here)
Are you taking (or have you taken) a specific CLASS that's giving you inspiration for a possible topic?
(We sometimes organize panels based on a common class)
Is there a specific FACULTY MEMBER either inspiring you to write on a specific topic or with whom you've discussed an idea you'd really like to research or present on?
Give a brief statement about your specific topics of interest (excluding English+)
Example: "I have a paper about the classical tradition in 18th century poetry I'd like to submit" or "I'm in a class about YA literature right now and I want to present on some YA author or novel" or "Several of us have been studying folktales and we might want to present as a group" Please keep your ideas closer to a sentence than to a paragraph
Applied English (English+) topics
If you have had or are currently involved in one of the following areas and would like to relate your personal experience about it (in the five-minute format described above), please so indicate. To hear current students' experiences, listen to the My Story audio podcast (https://soundcloud.com/byu-english-society)

Would you be interested in talking about your English+ / Applied English experience on our weekly audio podcast?
We cannot accommodate every area of English+ during our symposium, and some experiences are worth telling at greater length. We invite you to indicate any interest in telling your story about one of the above listed English+ areas in our weekly interview (audio) show (Interviews are recorded in the JFSB and go between 15-45 minutes). If you are not interested but you know of someone whose experience would be worth hearing about, nominate him/her under "Other" below

Volunteering
You may also participate in our symposium by volunteering for our event staff -- a good way of developing applied English skills! (This would not preclude you from presenting at the conference)
Indicate any areas in which you'd like to help with our English Symposium
Prize!
If you are entering your info into this form prior to November 1, 2015, you will be entered into a drawing.
If you win, which prize would you prefer?
(Watch the Major English News episode for Tuesday, October 20th to see who won)
