LitAGE Spring 2024 Conference Pre-Registration
ConferenceA Lighthouse for Literacy Symposium
When: Saturday, March 9, 2024, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Where: Second Floor of the Palumbo Academic Center at Gannon University (southeast portion of the building by the School of Education, beginning in classroom 2012)
Cost: $10.00 for teachers, $5 for pre-service teachers with university ID at the door, cash or check (made payable to "Literacy Association of Greater Erie")

This conference will feature three rounds of sessions (with at least two options per session) and a brief opening Keynote address.

Please complete this Google Form if you plan to attend on Saturday, March 9th. Registration fee can be paid at the door (cash or check made out to "Literacy Association of Greater Erie"). Dress casual, bring a notebook or device to take or share notes, and come ready to meet fellow educators.

  • A.1. Fun and Hands-on Activities to Foster Reading Comprehension
    Presenter: Shelly Bentley
    Description: This workshop session will feature fun and interactive activities you can use at literacy centers, small group reading session or as whole group after reading activities to promote comprehension strategies for students before, during and after reading.  Sample activities and modeling of each strategy activity will be provided.

    Presenter: Camille Dempsey

  • B.1. Cultural Literacy - A Shared Knowledge Base to Improve Comprehension
    Presenter: Amy Amendola
    Description: Looking for another tool to enhance students' reading comprehension? This cultural literacy session is for you. Learn the idea espoused by E.D. Hirsch that a shared knowledge base helps students better understand what they're reading (and watching) beyond a surface level. Cultural literacy lends itself nicely to all subjects, not just English.

    Description: Explore the dynamic intersection of AI and literacy as we delve into prompt engineering—a key tool for fostering critical thinking and creativity in K-12 classrooms. Join us to discover innovative AI tools, such as MagicSchool and ChatGPT, while learning practical strategies for integrating them into your teaching practice. 
  • C.2. Multimodal Curation Quest Adventure: Engaging Students in Active Learning
    Presenter: Jennifer Toney
    Description: This interactive session will take attendees on a multimodal curation question adventure. Led by an experienced ELA educator, participants will explore this innovative way to engage students in active learning through an authentic, project-based experience.  Attendees will leave with practical strategies for implementing this approach in their own learning communities.
