Take Action: Support Public Lands, Including our San Gabriel Mountains, Foothills and Rivers
We Need U.S. Senate Support for Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands in California and the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills Rivers Protection Act
We represent businesses, elected officials, civic leaders, NGOs & CBOs in the Los Angeles Region who support the Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands in California and our local region. We urge you to help us ensure that our precious remaining natural resources remain vibrant and a healthy ecosystem for plants, animals and the people who live in our region. We care deeply about our communities and we want to see them thrive with access to public lands, which will result in healthy, vibrant communities.
For the local region the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills Rivers Protection Act has been the bill in Congress that will make these protections a reality. The San Gabriel Mountains provide more than 30% of the region’s water supply and serve as the “lungs” for the greater Los Angeles region in combating climate change. The fact that they are also 70% of the regions’ open space and the place where millions recreate makes them our national treasure. Since the October 2014 proclamation by President Obama established the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, we have had tremendous success in the preservation of the objects of interest protected by the designation, improved visitor services and investments in new jobs for a diverse and younger workforce within the US Forest Service. The positive impacts of the designation are significant.
However, the Upper Los Angeles River watershed, an important area of the San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National Forest, was left out of the monument designation and the last remaining wild places deserve wilderness and wild river designations to ensure the strongest protections for the watershed. Further, the foothills outside of the Forest in the San Gabriel Valley, the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River corridors and the Puente Chino Hills present a real opportunity to connect, protect and create open spaces by establishing a National Recreation Area.
We are elated that this bill has passed in the House however we now need action by the Senate. Senators Padilla and Feinstein, we will be one step closer to making open space and parks more accessible to our communities so that our children will be able to enjoy all the benefits, mental and physical, that nature can provide with the passage of this bill. We, the undersigned, urge the Senate to pass protections for wilderness and public lands including the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills Rivers Protection Act to ensure our threatened natural resources remain protected, vibrant and accessible to all, now and for future generations.
