Hamline's Day of Reading RSVP
Join us on Tuesday, March 19th during Convo Hour for Hamline's Day of Reading! Inspired by Welcoming Schools National Day of Reading, the event aims to uplift and celebrate stories for Trans and Nonbinary youth! In collaboration with HUPB, and the Center for Gender + Sexualities, the Hamline School of Education and Leadership is excited to host this event, and bring a panel discussion with educators, students and community leaders to discuss ways we can support our LGBTQIA students through and beyond their education. 

We will have a small assortment of books for attendee's to choose from, but we highly encourage you to RSVP for your book of choice to help guarantee we are able to order one for you! Please note event attendance is required to receive a book. 

Light snacks and refreshments will be available.

Meet our Panelist! 
Jinger Gustafson (She/Her/Hers)

Jinger is an educational leader with over 20 years of experience in pre-k through grade 12 education. Throughout her career, she has served as a teacher, coach, dean of students, assistant principal, principal, and associate superintendent. Over the last five years, Gustafson counts herself fortunate to be able to work in higher education to prepare leaders to close systemic gaps in educational structures, a change from the long-held public belief that change should come by fixing gaps in individual students and educators.

Gustafson's research and writing interests include organizational ethics, special education, and equity. She is also an appointed member of the Board of School Administrators (BOSA) and served in the Army National Guard. 
Gustafson holds a bachelor of science in physical education; master of arts in learning technology; and a doctorate in educational leadership.

Jayce Alexander (He/Him/His)

Jayce Alexander is a dedicated advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), currently serving as the Senior DEI Coordinator for the city of Minnetonka. With a strong background in education and DEI training, Jayce brings a wealth of experience to his role.

Jayce holds certification from the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and is approved as an instructor by the MN Post Board. As the founder of Clear Lens Consulting, Jayce has demonstrated a commitment to advancing DEI initiatives in various sectors.

A graduate of Hamline University, Jayce is currently pursuing a Master's in Diversity Leadership at the University of St. Thomas, furthering his expertise in the field. Prior to his current position, Jayce spent seven years teaching at The Blake School, where he not only taught middle school social studies but also took a proactive role in fostering inclusivity. He created and led affinity groups for Black, Students of Color, and LGBTQIA+ students, while also serving as the advisor for the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA).

Jayce's passion for DEI extends beyond the classroom. He has also worked at Breakthrough Minneapolis, where he trained college students in teaching social studies and spearheaded DEI professional development programs.

Joe Lewis (He/Him/His)

Joe began teaching high school English/language arts in 1992 in the town of Slinger, Wisconsin. Since then, he has taught secondary and university-level English and English education in Milwaukee, Morocco, New York City, and Saint Paul. He earned his doctorate in English education at Columbia University Teacher's College, with a scholarly focus on cross-cultural language and literacy practices. At Hamline, Joe teaches Schools and Society, Teaching English in the Middle and High School, and Teaching Literacy in Middle and High School. Each year, he also travels to Tanzania, where he serves as an educational consultant at the Namnyaki Secondary School for Maasai Girls, promoting student-centered teaching and helping students develop their English skills. Joe lives in Saint Paul with his wife and two daughters.

He challenges his students to think beyond their own experiences— particularly around issues of race, class, culture and gender—and to act as advocates and mentors for all students.

Jason Bucklin (he/him) 

Jason has worked with LGBTQ youth and adults for 19 years in the Twin Cities and is currently the first LGBTQ Education Specialist at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). Prior to MDE Jason was the LGBTQ Program Coordinator at Minneapolis Public Schools and worked to create some of the first Gender Inclusive school policies in the nation as well as helped the development of the Minnesota Department of Education Transgender Toolkit. With a passion for racial equity and gender justice, Jason hopes that his work can positively impact the LGBTQ community. Outside of his work at MDE, Jason is a photographer with a focus on highlighting the LGTBQ community.
Carlos Stewart (He/Him/His) 

Carlos is a K-6 licensed teacher and received his Master’s of Arts Degree in Teaching from Hamline University in 2018, he is licensed in the state MN and WA. He has more than 15 years of experience in education, including teaching language learners, math and reading interventions, social-emotional skills, and is currently teaching in Minnesota. He firmly believes that all students deserve highly educators to meet them academically and social-emotionally where they are and take them where they want to go.
