Welcome to EaHoMA!
+ WHAT IS EAST HOLLYWOOD MUTUAL AID?

East Hollywood Mutual Aid is a collective of neighbors living in and around the East Hollywood area working together to support one another. We formed in response to the COVID-19 crisis and in relationship to Mutual Aid LA, building off of mutual aid traditions primarily in Indigenous and queer communities. Our larger umbrella organization of Mutual Aid LA has raised over a million dollars since March 2020, and that money has been redistributed across the city to provide groceries, cash assistance, and PPE to residents requesting support. We are looking to develop and sustain local support from East Hollywood residents for Easy Hollywood residents (housed, unhoused, and transitioning).

+ WHY DOES EAST HOLLYWOOD NEED MUTUAL AID?

The approximate median income of East Hollywood has risen steadily over the years, but that rise has also brought an ever-widening income gap, creating a steep economic disparity in the neighborhood (a neighborhood that was previously redlined in 1938). Census data from 2018 puts the lowest median household income at $26,167 per year and the highest at $62,073 per year. These numbers average about $40,000 per year, without accounting for our unhoused neighbors or for newer residents who make well above the 2018 highest recorded median household income.

Many neighbors are struggling just to pay rent and keep food on the table. This has been the case since before COVID, but resources have shifted dramatically since COVID, and many already struggling neighbors and neighborhood businesses face eviction and food scarcity. Mutual aid provides an alternative to government assistance and understands that elected officials and government programs will not save us. It is up to us to support each other and to share skills, money, and other resources so that everyone in our community can survive.

+ WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Think about your relationship to this neighborhood and how your presence impacts the community. Do you live in a newly renovated building or home? Do you shop at long-standing local businesses or do you prefer to patron newer businesses with higher price points? Do you make around or well above the 2018 highest recorded median household income ($62k/year)? Are you willing to redistribute some of your resources to your fellow community members to help cover bills, food, medical supplies, and other necessities for those with fewer resources?

We’re looking to build relationships with as many neighbors as we can, and in order to better support each other, we need to get honest about what we each have and what we can share. Currently East Hollywood is home to the EaHo Community Fridge, which provides free food for anyone 24 hours a day. One of our neighbors hosts weekly community cookouts and serves free food to over 100 people per week. These kinds of efforts require that neighbors assess our resources appropriately and share what we can with each other. Can we count you in to share resources and/or skills with our neighbors?
