What is the Public Theater?
The Public Theater is a New York City-based arts organization founded in 1954 by Joseph Papp, originally known as The Shakespeare Workshop. Its mission is to support and nurture emerging and established artists while providing accessible theater to the public. The Public Theater encompasses various venues, including the Joseph Papp Public Theater, the Delacorte Theater in Central Park (where it presents
Shakespeare in the Park), and
Joe's Pub.
