We believe young people can most effectively transform their communities when they have access to political education, leadership development, and organizing opportunities. By building power among girls, transgender youth, and gender nonconforming youth, the Carolina Youth Action Project works to develop the necessary infrastructure for radical change in the South.
CYAP is searching for a Youth Action Fellow to support our Youth Action Alliance (YAA) which runs from September 2018 through April 2019. The Youth Action Fellow will work most directly with the Youth Initiative Organizer for eleven hours a week.
YAA is a political education intensive that challenges a select group of girls, trans youth, and gender nonconforming youth to think critically about the impact of prisons and police in their communities. Youth meet twice a week throughout the school year to discuss and explore issues related to identity, community, mass incarceration, criminalization, school pushout, and abolition. YAA creates space for young people to grow as facilitators, engage with transformative justice processes, and attend site visits to learn from other political organizations.
We believe that our leaders should reflect the communities in which we work. Therefore, women, transgender people, gender nonconforming people, people of color, working class people, and people who have been directly impacted by the justice system are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applications must be able to attend both YAA sessions each week (Tuesday and Thursday, 5:00 - 8:00 PM) and a collective meeting the first Saturday of the month (10:30 AM - 3:30 PM).
Compensation: 11 hours a week at $15 per hour. The Youth Action Fellow position will existas a temporary role between September 2018 and May 2019.
Application deadline: Monday, September 3rd by 11:59 PM EST!
