Join researchers and students from the UH Mānoa, Hawai'i and Hasanuddin University, Indonesia for an expenses-paid, two-week Oral History Field School in Summer 2025 to document oral histories of forest landscapes in Indonesia!
What: A two-week Oral History Field School documenting oral histories of forest landscapes in Indonesia, together with local youth and elders, for environmental conservation.
(Optional: Documenting oral histories of forest landscapes with youth and elders in Hawai‘i in Spring 2025 via PACE 316 Environmental Governance)
Where: South Sulawesi, Indonesia
When: Summer, 2 weeks in July 2025
Who: UH undergraduate students
Why: Leave the classroom behind for a hands-on oral history field school documenting oral history landscapes in Indonesia! Learn about Indonesia and the region through a unique lens, gain a place-based and culturally-rooted understanding of environmental governance, conservation and issues in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and boost your cross-cultural research skills, and meet students, scholars and local community members from Southeast Asia.
There is increasing recognition in forest management and planning that local and culturally-rooted knowledge over resources are fundamental to long-term protection. Such engagement not only deepens understanding about the role and importance of landscapes and ecologies, it also cultivates an environmental stewardship ethic that helps sustain, deepen, and extend conservation efforts.
