If you are an international student, have you checked with OISS on whether you can work in your intended lab? *
If you are an international student, please be sure that your visa is compatible with doing research internships - questions on whether this is the case should be addressed to the Office of International Students and Scholars at Rice. More information can be found at the website 'oiss.rice.edu'. Note that failure to properly comply with visa laws has resulted in deportations for students.

Give a two to three sentence summary of the project you intend to do this semester *
Be sure to clearly connect your project to neuroscience in some way. For example, if you are studying a gene related to a brain cancer, explain that there is a connection and don't assume I know what the gene does. Also note that doing psychological survey work by itself rarely qualifies for NEUR 310 credit - PSYC 485 or CSCI 390 are more appropriate. Exceptions do apply, but generally there must be a physiological component. Email flynn@rice.edu if you wish for clarification.
Project Start Date *
For spring and fall semesters, this should roughly align with the beginning of the semester you are signing up for. Schedules in the summer are more complicated, but please give yourself at least 4 weeks to satisfy the requirements for NEUR 310.

Expectations of the research supervisor and the student
For a student taking 3 credit hours, the expectation is that they will work on average 9 hours per week. With the consent of your PI, a student can have some flexibility in this (i.e., six hour one week, 12 hours the next).  Less credit can be earned for proportionally less time (i.e. you can sign up for 1 or 2 credits), but the number of credits must be selected by mutual agreement of faculty supervisor and student at time of registration. For NEUR 310 to count as fulfilling an elective requirement for either the CSCI major or neuroscience major/minor, 3 credit hours are needed.

Students will be required to provide a weekly summary of their progress by 11:59 PM each Saturday throughout the semester (sans spring break if applicable). This will be done via an online form that can be accessed via a link provided to students over Canvas. This summary will be emailed to the PI, the student, and their bench mentor upon submission. Provided that the student keeps a good lab notebook, this form should take no more that 15 minutes a week to complete.

For assessment of performance, your Research Advisor will review your assignments and performance throughout the semester using an online form they will be emailed by the Course Instructor. This form must be completed a minimum of two days before the grade submission deadline specified at 'https://registrar.rice.edu/calendars'. Part of this assessment will be based on a final project turned into both the faculty and the NEUR 310 instructor (Dr. Flynn). This final project can vary, and details will be provided via Canvas. Alternative final projects (submitted papers, internal documentation, etc.) are acceptable, but must be negotiated with Dr. Flynn on a case by case basis.
