Advocacy is one of the key instruments of civil society organizations (CSOs) for achieving positive social change. We are witnessing a decade-long trend of decline in democracy and fundamental freedoms globally, with increasing restrictions on civil society in many countries. Civil society needs to explore new tactics and strategies to push back against restrictions in hostile contexts around the world.

Despite the decline in democracy, many CSOs continue to advocate in a ‘traditional’ way, based on the assumption that functional institutions and policymakers are basically willing to enter a dialogue with civil society. However, when decision/policy makers either ignore CSO advocacy efforts and demands or are even hostile to them, CSOs are struggling to make any change. Faced with these challenges and demands from donors to deliver tangible policy changes, CSOs are struggling to find new ways of doing advocacy.

By initiating a discussion among different Helvetas’ projects and RAN members, the webinar shall generate new insights on how to best support partner CSOs in their advocacy efforts, and what new approaches shall be explored. The ideas brought up during the webinar will be further explored at the annual RAN Workshop that will be held in October 2024, hosted by PRAGG.

You are warmly welcome to share your views and ideas: Ask tricky questions, challenge the way we were trained to think about advocacy and share your lessons learned.
