In our community, we all want food that is local, sustainable, fair, humane, and healthy. Food purchased with public dollars should reflect public values. The Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) was first adopted by the Los Angeles Food Policy Council to ensure public food dollars reflect public values. To date, it has been adopted by Los Angeles Unified School District, City of Los Angeles, San Francisco Unified School District, Oakland Unified School District, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, and the City of Chicago. Local campaigns to support Program expansion are currently active in: Austin, Cincinnati, Denver, Madison, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City and Washington D.C.
In short, the GFPP is a food system program and policy initiative that has been making waves around the country by helping large institutions buy their food from value-driven suppliers by creating meaningful and achievable goals for food purchasing in each of the Program’s five value areas: local, sustainable, fair, humane, and healthy.*
The Good Food Buffalo Coalition is working to bring this breakthrough policy to Buffalo. The mission of our Coalition is to bring the Program to public institutions in the WNY region and to assist those institutions to adopt and implement this Program in ways that align with our Coalition’s vision, roles, and beliefs, as well as alignment with the five values of GFPP.
