Please fill out this form with the level of engagement you would like to have as a volunteer. We want to provide a variety of opportunities for you to learn and help out.
Here's our timeline for those of you who are new, and a refresher for our veterans:
- Opportunistic road patrols are welcome any time from April to June to
help herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians, aka "herps!") navigate roads while they move from their overwintering sites.
- June road patrols! As soon as we see turtles crossing roads to nest, we patrol to save them and their eggs, morning and evening, 7
days a week until they're done. Nesting usually lasts a solid month once it starts.
- We get most of July off to relax. Not much herp movement
- End of July our incubated hatchlings begin to emerge, and draw thousands of eyeballs where they'll be set up in the Eco Adventures'
Welcome Centre. We will have Biosphere Ambassadors in place to educate Eco's guests about the Long Point Biosphere Region and Ontario's turtles, the threats they face, and how we can help!
- Daily in August our ambassadors will be at the hatchery with me, caring for our hatchlings and preparing them for release while we educate thousands of guests at
the same time. Our last hatchlings were released in early September last year, and may be a bit later this year.
- At the end of August and throughout September, wild turtle nests will be emerging and hatchlings will need our help to cross roads to make it to the marsh safely. More road patrols!
- Opportunistic road patrols are more than welcome any time in late September and October to help
- herps navigate roads while they move to their overwintering sites.
- **Fall is the peak time young snakes are killed on roads. Warm, sunny days in October are the worst!**
If you aren't able to help this year, don't worry! Zero judgment here; this is a volunteer program and we know that not everyone has the time or resources to help. The first two questions are the only ones required before you can submit the form.
