The Honorable __________
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative __________:

As much as some try to insist otherwise, the Constitution does not guarantee equal protection from discrimination for all people. Specifically, discrimination on the basis of sex remains legal under the Constitution. This is outrageous. This is dangerous. This is unacceptable. This is why we need the Equal Rights Amendment. This is why we need you to pass H. J. Res. 79, Removing the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Because we, the youth of this country, the future of this country, deserve to live true to the founding words of our nation; liberty, and justice, for all.

There is no clear judicial standard for deciding cases of sex discrimination. Federal and state courts are inconsistent in their rulings regarding claims of sexual discrimination. The ERA would clarify sex discrimination jurisprudence. An additional aspect of this same issue that affects all women and people beyond the binary in the United States of America, is that The ERA would provide a strong legal defense against a rollback of the significant advances in their rights that have been achieved since the mid–20th century. Members of Congress have tried to cripple Title IX, opposed the Violence Against Women Act, the Fair Pensions Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act, voted to pay for Viagra for servicemen but oppose funding for family planning and contraception, and for decades blocked U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). As our Constitution stands now, without the ERA, all of this legislation could be snatched away, taking centuries of progress with it.

It is critical that H. J. Res. 79 is passed in the House of Representatives. In order to finally have constitutional gender equality, the arbitrary deadline set on the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment has to be removed. The shape of our country’s future depends on it.

Thank you for your consideration of our viewpoint on this matter.

Sincerely,
Generation Ratify and Gender Equality Activists,
