Here you can indicate which committee(s) you're interested in participating. The time commitment is one meeting per month (virtual). Here are the options:
Member Care & Welcoming Committee
This committee looks after members who are struggling and welcomes newcomers. Someone sick might need a meal dropped off. Someone stressed might need someone to vent to. Someone lonely just needs to know people noticed they were gone. The committee also runs our plan for greeting new people at events, because whether someone talks to a first-time visitor is the single biggest factor in whether they come back.
Activism & Advocacy Committee
This committee covers two areas: activism and advocacy. Activism includes organizing/attending protests and rallies, joining a coalition action alongside partners like Wake County Indivisible and 50501NC, and similar activities. Advocacy includes advocating for issues on the legislative side: meeting with lawmakers, tracking bad bills, and educating our community on actions we can take. Focus on what moves you or try both. No experience required.
Education Committee
This committee plans events with more depth than a purely social hangout: Deep Dive Discussions (small group conversations about specific topics relevant to non-believers) and Book Club (which reads and discusses books on topics such as philosophy, religion, and spirituality). The committee may also recommend guest speakers or build out new event types with an educational focus.
Service Committee
This committee plans hands-on service work: food drives, diaper bank support, and cleanups at local parks and trails. If there's a need in the wider community, this is the committee that helps us show up to meet it.
Social Committee
This committee plans and hosts TFS's social events: Happy Heathen Hour, Secular Saturday Social, board game nights, movie nights, picnics, and outdoor meetups like hikes, walks, and paddles. The committee also comes up with new events as interest grows.
Fundraising & Development Committee
This committee raises money for TFS, now and down the road. Short term: membership drives, donation campaigns, and merch sales. Long term: recurring donor programs, event sponsorships, and grants, working toward two big goals: a part-time executive director and a physical space TFS can use for events and organizing. The point isn't just covering next year's budget. It's building real power for the secular community in the Triangle.
