Middle School Careers Day February 19th, in Hutchinson, KS

During the Middle School Careers Day, middle school students will rotate through learning by doing job stations separated by the seven career fields as defined in the Kansas Career Clusters Model.

The Middle School Careers Day will be like a field trip since currently schools will pay $10 per student to attend the event. The high school event’s cost is underwritten by the postsecondary institutions buying booth space. We are asking business and industry entities to donate their time and then bring job booths. If we are able to get some industries to help underwrite some of the cost, then that would then reduce the cost for schools to attend.

The Middle School Careers Day will be structured with 16 career cluster areas, divided by the 7 career fields. In each of the 16 career cluster areas, we will have around 8 different job stations hosted by our volunteer presenters. Each job station should include a learning-by-doing activity that is focused on a specific job role. Students will be divided up into 16 groups that will rotate through each career cluster area throughout the day. The student groups will rotate career areas every 20 minutes. As a presenter, you will talk to a total of 16 groups throughout the day for roughly 20 minutes at a time. Each group will have around 10 students.

The day is more structured and during their day they will get to experience all seven of the seven career fields with example job stations. The day was envisioned as a way that our small schools could be able to really their students to jobs in all seven career fields despite having very limited business and industry options within their school district. We also wanted to help middle school students to see how their academics they will take can/would connect to their career of interest therefore creating more learning relevance for the student.
