Bakersfield City School District Dual Language Immersion Parent & Community Interest Survey

Survey Introduction
Bakersfield City School District is considering the expansion of a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. This program is intended to develop world language proficiency by starting Spanish language instruction as early as kindergarten.

The implementation of our program would begin in kindergarten in the first year and would expand each year until fully implemented in elementary and secondary grades. Additionally, a new group of kindergarten students would begin each year. The program encourages participation by English- and Spanish language-speaking students. Approximately 60 students are needed in Kindergarten to support starting the program. The district is committed to programmatic support through 8th grade.

Our overarching programmatic goals include:

To encourage students to study world languages
To certify the attainment of biliteracy skills (SEAL of Biliteracy) – for employers and for colleges
To communicate the value of language diversity
To prepare students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global economy
To honor the multiple cultures and languages in our community through intergroup relationships
