2021 - 2022 GYM Program - Mentor Application
Thank you for your interest in our Global Youth Mentor (GYM) Program!

Since 2014, inspiring youth to take action has always been core to Plastic Tides. Now more than ever, youth leadership is vital to the success of the environmental movement.

The Global Youth Mentor (GYM) Program gives motivated students the opportunity to become Youth Leaders and execute an independent research project for a positive environmental change in their community. Youth Leaders are paired with Mentors from all over the world and are directed through change-based projects. GYM project ideas range broadly, but their objectives are always the same – lasting, systemic, quantitative change. Youth Leaders can work with Mentors to develop their own projects or can select from our Project Models which focus on:
• Local Legislation
• Microfiber Intervention
• Plastic Utensils
• Cafeteria Trays
• Community Clean-Up
• Hydration
• Community Orchards & Gardens
• Reusable Bag Campaign

In this program, Mentors help Youth Leaders to distill their ideas, formulate project specifics, set goals, and stay on track. Youth Leaders and Mentors who join GYM are onboarded onto our program’s online platform and walked through expectations, project basics, and community. Our online platform is home to all Mentor and Youth Leader communications, provides parents access, and is monitored by our team internally. Youth Leaders can brainstorm with one another and provide each other support and Mentors can troubleshoot project hurdles by speaking with those who have successfully led their Youth Leaders over those same obstacles. By providing accountability and guidance through one-on-one mentorship, this program is designed to be accessible to any motivated student who wants to make an impact. [NOTE: As the pandemic continues to influence education culture, our team is committed to researching and implementing the remote learning practices and digital communication strategies that will provide students with the best learning experience possible].

We are seeking GYM Mentors who are dedicated to protecting our planet and want to inspire action toward a plastic-free future through education and youth empowerment. GYM Mentor applicants should be:
• Enthusiastic about Plastic Tides mission.
• Willing to share their skills, knowledge, and expertise.
• Able to creatively and effectively teach and work with 12-18 year old students.
• Active listeners who know how to provide constructive feedback.
• Great communicators and organizers.
• Literate in telecommunication (able to communicate and teach through virtual means).
• Knowledge of Canvas or other Learning Management Systems preferred but not required.

This position is part-time, remote, unpaid, and contracted from August 2021 to June 2022. Each GYM Mentor will be responsible for mentoring up to three Youth Leaders and will have to commit to completing five hours of work per week.
