New York State Rules of Professional Conduct strongly encourage attorneys to perform pro bono legal and other services to benefit low-income people. 22 NYCRR Part 1200, Rule 6.1. The Office of Court Administration requires attorneys to complete an anonymous report of voluntary pro bono services and monetary contributions when completing their Attorney Registration.

This past year, the Government Service Public Interest (GSPI) and Pro Bono and Community Services (PBCS) Committees have been committed to providing AABANY members a greater range of pro bono opportunities.

The purpose of the following survey is to gauge everyone’s interest in the pro bono initiatives listed below, so that we can determine how to best allocate AABANY resources. Training will be provided to you prior to your participation and will likely offer CLE credits.

Please check off which programs you would be interested in.

Immigration – Represent domestic violence survivors or childhood arrivals (DACA). Approx. Time Commitment: 35 – 45 hours

Housing – Assist low-income tenants with rent and repair issues during one-day clinics. Approx. Time Commitment: One Weekend Day

Education – Represent students in suspension hearings. Approx. Time Commitment: 15 - 20 hours.

General – Provide legal counseling or administrative assistance at AABANY Pro Bono Clinic in Chinatown. Volunteers will provide free, limited legal advice to walk-in clients at community organizations. Approx. Time Commitment: Volunteers will sign up for participating in a minimum of one clinic located at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in Chinatown. Each clinic will run for 3 hours.
