Sign up for an exciting 'Digital Storytelling for the African Storybook Project' free, short, online course commencing on 15th April 2013

We invite you to participate in the free online course for South African educators entitled ‘Digital Storytelling for the African Storybook Project’ on offer from SchoolNetSA and the African Storybook Project Team. This will be a four-week free, online course held during the second term 2013, commencing on 15th April.

AIMS

• to introduce you to online digital writing and how it can enrich both you and your learners
• to take you through the simple steps for creating and publishing an online story suitable for a Grade 1-3 learner so that you can duplicate the process with your class.
• to ask you to consider donating created stories suitable for Grades 1-3 readers to the African Storybook Project website (still under construction) for the children of Africa to read, translate and use. Find out more about this project by reading 'Welcome to the African Storybook Project' (http://schoolnetsa.blogspot.com/2013/03/30-days-of-writing-1-welcome-to-african.html) on the SchoolNet blog.

THE PROPOSED COURSE OUTLINE

WEEK 1: Introducing Digital Storytelling

During the first week of the course, participants will learn about digital storytelling, online safety for their students and Creative Commons licensing methods for online creations. They will be introduced to free online storytelling tools.

WEEK 2: Creating a suitable story structure

During the second week of the course, participants will learn about the different methods of creating a story, and practise writing a story offline.

WEEK 3: Write your story in PowerPoint (or a similar presentation tool) and add images

During the third week of the course, participants will be introduced to using a presentation application such as PowerPoint for their digital writing, and will discover places to find royalty-free illustrations on the Internet. They will be introduced to different free plateforms for hosting a presentation online.

WEEK 4: Explore adding your story to an online digital writing tool of your choice

During the fourth week of the course, participants will be encouraged to transfer their story to one of the lovely free creative digital tools available on the web. They will be shown how to select the right tool.

WEBINARS AND CERTIFICATES

This course is supported by 'how to' webinars and offers a Certificate of Completion from SchoolNet and the African Storybook Project if certain requirements are met. Please fill in the form below if you would like to join us. You will then be sent an email directing you to the course platform. The course is arranged in such a way that you can easily catch up if you start late.

A GREAT ADDED INCENTIVE FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS COURSE

This course carries an incentive with it. Teachers are encouraged to inspire their students to write a story suitable for a Grade 1-3 student in PowerPoint or similar with illustrations attached. The story should have a title page, an end page plus a minimum of six ‘chunks’ (maximum 16), each with a suitable illustration. A teacher from the school that submits the most usable stories will be fully sponsored to attend an international Reading and Writing Conference in August in Nairobi as part of the African Storybook Team.

You are welcome to contact co-ordinator with any further queries (fiona@schoolnet.org.za). It will be great having you on board!

PS Don't forget to press SUBMIT at the bottom of the form, and then expect to see a message of confirmation!
