NOAA Open House Registration (May 10 & 11, 2018)
** The open house is currently at capacity for Thursday and Friday school groups. Please encourage your students to attend the open house on Saturday when we are open to the public from 10 - 3 pm

Dear Science Teachers:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal agency that provides daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, climate monitoring, fisheries management, and coastal restoration, is opening its doors to the south Florida community with a free open house May 10-12, 2018.

Three of Miami's local NOAA offices, the National Marine Fisheries Service Southeast Fisheries Science Center, the National Weather Service Miami Forecast Office, and the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, in conjunction with the University of Miami Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science, are hosting the event. This is a great opportunity to enhance STEM education. We strongly encourage middle school teachers to consider this open house a field trip to introduce middle school students to science in action!

The open house will be an interactive experience, rotating throughout the NOAA facilities on Virginia Key, and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School's Marine Technology and Life Sciences Seawater Complex, for a total visit time of approximately 4 hours. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the MAST Academy Land SHARC and Weather on Wheels mobile outreach programs, and speak with a NOAA weather forecaster during the open house.

Science topics will include hurricane research, climate science, oceanography, local fisheries, coral communities, and endangered species research. Please join us as we celebrate the Third International Year of the Reef, with scientists will be on-hand to describe their research projects and answer questions.

There are picnic grounds available at NOAA for students to eat before or after their tour. There are no facilities to purchase lunch on-site. The tours begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and it takes 4 hours to visit all of the research entities and the MAST outreach programs. Buses may park on-site along Virginia Beach Drive. There is no cost to participate in the open house.

Advance on-line registration is required by May 1st. We can only accommodate a limited number of students on each day, so register early!
