This year’s Metropolitan Chicago Synod Assembly, held on Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, 2019, will include a bishop’s election.
Our synod constitution provides an opportunity for all registered voting members (by April 1, 2019) to identify any ELCA-ordained clergy person as a potential nominee for the office of bishop. **Please note that this is only an identification process.** Actual nominations will take place on the first day of the assembly by an ecclesiastical ballot. (Please see S9.04 of the Constitution of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod beginning on page 20 to review the process for an ecclesiastical ballot and the pre-election canvass. The Constitution can be found at http://www.mcselca.org/forms/MCS_Constitution_June_2017.pdf. A helpful overview of the process can be found at http://www.mcselca.org/assets/Pre-election_Canvass_2019.pdf.) This year’s Pre-election Canvass Committee for Bishop would like to invite any member of a congregation within the Metropolitan Chicago Synod to identify one question that may be asked at the open forums prior to the synod assembly (see below).
BISHOP’S ROLEPlease review the role of a synod bishop in S8.12 of the Constitution of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod beginning on page 12 before submitting your question. The Constitution can be found at http://www.mcselca.org/forms/MCS_Constitution_June_2017.pdf.
OPEN FORUMS The top six (possibly eight, with ties) individuals, as identified by the voting members to the 2019 Synod Assembly, will be invited to answer a selection of questions submitted by voting members and members within the synod. We encourage your attendance at one or more of these forums and that you invite your congregation to come and listen to potential nominees for the office of bishop:
