Early preview: Canada's Green Food Guide
Improving the conversation about healthy food habits
In 2019, the new official "Canada's Food Guide" took several steps in the right direction:
  • Moving to a plate-based approach
  • Removing the standalone "dairy" category
  • Highlighting "protein foods" as opposed to "meat"
  • In the supporting materials, nudging Canadians to "choose plants more often"
Unfortunately, animal products including fish, eggs, and even red meat are still prominently featured in the guide.

The "Canada's Green Food Guide" poster corrects these mistakes with a new poster.

"Canada's green food guide" does the following:
  • Substitutes "beans" for the "protein foods" category, also picturing lentils and bean products (tofu)
  • Layers a foundation of dark leafy greens to the "vegetables and fruits" side of the plate
  • Adds an invitation to "snack on nuts and seeds" to ensure the intake of healthy plant fats
  • Highlights the importance of seasoning with herbs and spices for bonus phytonutrients.

"Canada's Green Food Guide" was created by Brigitte Gemme (Vegan Family Kitchen) with support from photographer Tosha Lobsinger. The primary intention is to use this image as a conversation piece, particularly in the context of the United Nations' climate conference in Fall of 2024 (COP 29). The poster will also be available for plant-friendly health professionals and educators.

The goal of Canada's Green Food Guide is not to be a food guide for vegans and plant-based people. Rather, it reflects healthy eating goals that all Canadians can benefit from

The GreenFoodGuide.ca website hasn't yet been developed. With your support, more resources - mirroring those currently available on the Canadian government's food guide website - will be created to make it easier for Canadians and others to embrace a healthy plant-based diet.
