Support UM Climate Response Club's Projects
(Scroll down to sign petitions)

Would you like to see UM commit to reducing carbon emissions and prioritizing sustainability? The UM Climate Response Club is working on multiple projects to reduce campus carbon emissions. Please scroll down to show your support for some or all of these projects. More details about each are included below. Additionally, filling out this survey will enter your name into a drawing for $10 of UMoney!

The goal of these projects is to show student interest for making UM more sustainable. We hope to reduce the carbon and environmental footprint of our university, and also support ideas that could be funded from federal grants and would cut university expenses, potentially leading to lower tuition!

Thank you for acting on campus! Here are more detailed descriptions of the petition items above.
[1]: LEED certification is an independent building certification taking into account many criteria, including efficiency, water use, and protection of biodiversity. The highest ranking is Platinum, then Gold, then Silver. More information: https://www.usgbc.org/leed

[2]: Currently, only permanent buildings that cost more than 10 million $ must be LEED certified. The CRC believes that this should be a requirement for all or most construction projects happening on campus.

[3]: It would be easy to get federal funding to set up solar panels as a roof over the south parking lot of campus. This would generate cost-free and renewable energy for campus, lowering fees and tuition on the long run.

[4]: Construction of any new buildings should require the destruction of an older one due to the fact that every new building vastly increases carbon emissions from heating and electricity. This would encourage UM to utilize the unused space in existing buildings or be intentional about constructing only fully essential new buildings. We can't keep on constructing without making older buildings more efficient or without replacing old buildings.

[5]: There are many different carbon capture measures, some very efficient (for example in cement). Federal funds exist to fund this. These must be implemented when constructing new buildings.

[6]: This athletics practice facility, also called Bubble Dome, was announced to be built as a temporary facility in late 2021, built with donor money only (rather than tuition or tax money). It will be directly next to the Clark Fork River. Today, the cost has at least multiplied by 5 and will rely on some taxpayer money. It was updated to a permanent facility and has the potential to leak pollution into the Clark Fork river and add to UM's carbon emissions. UM must be transparent on this project, in every regard.
