Welcome to the seventh annual Del Valle High School Percussion Ensemble Festival!!! The festival will consist of two days. Solos will compete on Friday the 13th and ensembles will compete on Saturday the14th. There will also be clinics given by our judges throughout the two days. The Festival will consist of several parts:
High School Individual Competition/Ratings (Includes Snare/Tenor/Multi-Percussion/Keyboard and Timpani categories) High School Competitive Percussion Ensemble (Includes Bass Drum, Tenor and Cymbal Ensembles)- 2+ players Middle School Competitive Percussion Ensemble (Includes Bass Drum Ensembles)- 2+ players
Fees - $10 per student/per event. For example, if a student performs in one ensemble and one solo their fee would be $20. If a student performs in two Ensembles, their fee would be $20. If a student just performs one solo OR only performs in one ensemble their fee would be $10. If your ensemble consists of seven players, the fee for the ensemble would be $70.
Ensemble Guideline: Trophies will be handed out to the top three placing ensembles in both the High School and Middle School categories.
Categories: Percussion, Bass Drum, Tenors and Cymbal EnsemblesBass drum ensembles may use bass drums only. Cymbal ensembles may use cymbals only. Both categories must be 3–6 players.
Percussion Ensemble: (2+ players) Instrumentation is limited to those instruments typically utilized and recognized as part of a percussion family (this includes all world percussion instruments). Electronic instruments recognized as normal stage and band rhythm section instruments are also allowed. Conventional wind and/ or string instruments (other than string bass and guitar) may not be used. Single tone, non-keyed horns (i.e. whistles, sirens, animal calls, ect.) may be used only if generating an effect and may not be used in any melodic form.
To facilitate effective comments, all soloists/ ensembles must provide 3 copies of the score for judges to review during the performance.

PERFORMANCEBass drum, tenor, and cymbal ensembles may NOT be accompanied.
PENALTIESAny severe divergence from the time guidelines is subject to penalty by contest director.
ProgramConsider: the musical journey/presentation, creativity, clarity of thought, musical content60 pts.
FulfillmentConsider: communication, musicianship, presence, idiomatic interpretation, expression, and excellence (as it relates to effectiveness)40 pts.
Total 100 pts
Judging will be based on the criteria listed above. Judges’ scores will be averaged to determine the final score. In the event of a tie, the Fulfillment score will be used as the first tiebreaker. If there is still a tie, then the rankings by each judge will be used. If there is still a tie after that, then we will have co-winners. Both winners will receive awards.
Individual Solo Guideline: Soloists will receive ratings as follows: Rating of I for a solo 85pts or higher, rating of II for a solo 70-84pts, rating of III for a score 69 and below. Top three solos in each category will receive a Trophy, respectively.

Solos must be within the time limit mentioned or are subject to penalty by the contest director. If a solo is over the time limit it must be cut. Soloists may be accompanied.
Execution/TechniqueConsider: quality of sound, clarity of articulation, timing and rhythmic accuracy, implement control, demand, precision, consistency.50 pts.
Repertoire/Music EffectConsider: range, construction and complexity, variety/vocabulary, exposure to error (timing, speed, tempo, meter, stamina), musicality (dynamics, expression), showmanship/communication, and professionalism50 pts.
KEYBOARD/TIMPANI/MULTIPLE PERCUSSION RUBRIC:
PerformanceConsider: precision, technique, interpretation, clarity, implement control, complexity of repertoire, intonation, tone quality50 pts.
Musical EffectivenessConsider: overall effectiveness, musicianship, expression, professionalism, showmanship, creativity50 pts.
Judging will be based on the criteria listed above. Both Snare/Multi-Tenors and the Keyboard/Timpani/Multiple Percussion categories will be evaluated on their own sheets, respectively. Judges’ scores will be averaged to determine the final score. In the event of a tie in the snare drum/multi-tenors competition, the Execution Score will be used as the tie-breaker. In the keyboard/timpani/multiple percussion competition, in the event of a tie, the Performance score will be used as the tie-breaker. If in either category there is still a tie after the first tie-breaker, then the rankings by each judge will be used. If a tie exists after that, we will have co-winners. Both winners will receive awards.
