Supervisor Evaluation Form: Dr Alastair Potts
Dear Student,

I was never taught how to be a supervisor — it's all been on-the-job learning. And I know that, in all likelihood, I made some (many?) mistakes as a supervisor. Some of these I may not be aware of. I also realise that there are probably some things that I do really well as a supervisor — and maybe I don't know about the things that I do right and you appreciate. It is only through feedback that I learn.

Please could you take a moment to provide feedback on my supervision — the good and the bad. It provides me with the rare opportunity to reflect on how I supervise. Much of what I do well is because students have told me what I have done badly, and I worked on fixing it.

I thank you for your time and honesty. I promise to take all criticisms with the spirit in with which you share them — to allow me to become a better supervisor.

I've asked for your name and title of your thesis or project, but feel free to not fill this in if you wish to remain anonymous (but also realise that it may not be anonymous given how few postgraduate students I supervise each year).

Please note that if there are issues around my supervision that you feel too uncomfortable about raising in this evaluation, please consider letting the Head of the Botany Department or Director of School know about these. You have rights as a student — and that includes having a good supervisor.

Thank you,
Alastair
