What is Student U?
Student U is a college-access organization in Durham. We believe that all students have the ability to succeed. In order to make this dream a reality, Student U creates a pipeline of services to support students through middle school, high school, and college. By providing direct services during the school year and summer, we ensure that our students develop the academic skills and personal well-being needed to beat the statistics and succeed in college. In order to make our bold dream of 100% college enrollment and graduation a reality, we know that our students need to develop the academic skills that it takes to be college-bound. In both our Middle School and High School Programs, we provide tutoring for our students to make sure they are becoming their best selves in the classroom.
Middle School Tutoring
During the school year, we see our middle school students every day after school at our Year Round After-School Program at the W.G. Pearson Center in Durham (600 E. Umstead St.) In order to support our students and help them be successful in school, we need volunteer to help our students both complete and understand their homework. We need tutors to work with students every Monday-Thursday from either 3:00-5:00 PM or from 4:30-6:30 PM.
High School Tutoring
Student U hosts tutoring sessions for our high school students once a week on Tuesday evenings, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at the W.G. Pearson Center (600 E. Umstead St.). Tutors work one-on-one with students or with small groups of students. Tutors support our students by helping them complete individual assignments but also by helping them build the study habits and note-taking skills that they need to excel in high school. We are seeking tutors who can support students in one or more of the following subjects: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Spanish, Latin, World History, and US History.
