About the Contest
The Friends of Music Hall Student Silent Film Contest invites students in grades 7–12 to step into the world of early cinema and create an original silent film that captures story, emotion, and imagination—without recorded dialogue.
This contest celebrates the artistry of silent film storytelling and gives young filmmakers the opportunity to have their work recognized by local filmmakers and critics, and screened in a historic venue connected to Cincinnati’s performing arts legacy.
Film Requirements
- Eligibility: Students in grades 7–12 (individual or team submissions permitted)
- Length: 5 minutes or less (including titles/credits)
- Format: Silent film (no recorded dialogue, music is encouraged)
- Content: Family-friendly
- Originality: Film must be the original work of the student(s)
- Platform: Film must be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo (public or unlisted link accepted)
Awards & ScreeningThe top three films will be selected and honored with cash prizes:
- 1st Place: $250
- 2nd Place: $150
- 3rd Place: $100
