MATH TAUGHT THE RIGHT WAY (MTRW) Spring 2020 Application
6B, 7B, 8B GROUPS ARE FULL AND CLOSED! There are only a few open slots for 9B GROUP.

MATH TAUGHT THE RIGHT WAY is a math program of the Berkeley Math Circle for middle and high school students at UC Berkeley, held for 3 hours 5-8pm on Mondays throughout the academic year. The program is intellectually demanding, testing and encouraging the mental development of students in a content-rich and challenging environment of algebra, geometry, and problem solving. The MTRW does NOT conform to generic U.S. labels of math classes (e.g., Algebra 1, Algebra 2, etc.). By the end of 9th grade the MTRW will have surpassed the regular U.S. math curriculum by a lot, not just in breadth but more importantly in depth. Learning to "read and write mathematics" is a skill that is emphasized at MTRW as the basis for communicating mathematics.

The Spring 2020 Math Taught the Right Way Dates:
Start date: January 20, 2020 (Monday, MLK)
Classes WILL be held on February 17, 2020 (Monday, President's Day).
There will be NO classes on March 23, 2020 (Monday, UCB Spring break).
End date: May 4, 2020 (Monday)
In total, there are 15 Mondays of classes.

The instructors at the MTRW have Ph.D., M.A., BA's in math or other related degrees in science and are distinguished teachers at the Berkeley Math Circle, universities and elite middle and high schools. The MTRW has homeworks every week in each of the three subjects. HWs are graded and returned the following week. There are final exams in each subject. Report cards are generated each semester with % of completed regular and bonus work, as well as statistics of the corresponding classes and a list of top performers and winners in various categories.

The application process will likely be completed within just a few days of opening this application portal. Selection process will be based on a timely and complete application and submitted check and on high academic qualifications. We will NOT be able to continue all MTRW Spring 2020 students: we will select only those who have shown improved performance and dedication at the program. We will also accept very strong new candidates.

Enrollment for MTRW S'20 will be finalized as soon as the groups reach capacity, which has historically happened within a few days. You must NOT contact BMC/MTRW staff with routine or non-emergency questions at any time: we do NOT reply to such email inquiries as we do NOT have the resources to answer questions from many hundreds of families on email. Instead, wait until the BMC and MTRW restart in the fall and you can ask us or other families in person.

Check Number *
Write down the exact check number you will use for the fee for the Math Taught the Right Way for Spring 2020. Include only 1 (one) student per check. See below how the check must be written: to the UNITED MATH CIRCLES FOUNDATION. Note that "Circles" has an "s" at the end (in the past we have gotten several checks written to "United Math Circle Foundation" which is incorrect). No siblings on the same check are allowed! Write the student name on the note line of the check. If the check is incorrectly written, or written for a future date, we will not be able, unfortunately, to accept your child since there will be no time or opportunity to be sending warning messages or waiting for new checks to arrive: as history shows, the application process will be over within a few days of opening this portal.

Applying to MTRW in Spring 2020: *
Did you (will you) apply to BMC Spring 2020? *
If you applied (will apply) to BMC Beginner I, II, or Intermediate I, to which MTRW in Spring 2020 group are you applying? *
If you applied to (will apply to) BMC Intermediate II or Advanced in Spring 2020, to which MTRW in Spring 2020 group are you applying? *
As it happened before, we may have to restrict participation of students only to one of the two programs -- MTRW and BMC -- on levels MTRW 6B, 7B, 8B and BMC Beginner I, II, and Intermediate I. If you applying to BMC Beginner I, II or Intermediate I, we may not be able to accommodate your 6B, 7B, or 8B MTRW application for Spring 2020. (If you are applying to MTRW 9B group or BMC Intermediate II, or BMC Advanced, or are not applying to both MTRW and BMC, please mark N/A). *
