The 2024 Civic Switchboard regional Institutes are an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) supported effort to develop the capacity of libraries to participate in local civic data ecosystems. 

In 2024, we will host 6 regional and one online Institute. This application is for the Portland, OR-based Institute on July 11-12, 2024. Learn more about the Institutes at our website.

About the Institute

The Civic Switchboard Institute in Portland, OR will bring together 20 library workers who are currently working with civic data or who are interested in developing new civic data roles and projects in their libraries.

By participating in the Institute, you can:

  • Connect with other regional library workers and expand a community of practice focused on libraries and civic data;

  • Explore your civic data ecosystem and potential roles for your library;

  • Connect with exemplars of library civic data intermediary work by engaging with the work of host sites;

  • Discover critical dimensions of data work, including power, social justice, and responsible data practices to mitigate harms;

  • Help improve civic data educational materials for a library audience.

The Institute is designed around several hands-on activities that will help participants get a better handle on their own civic data ecosystems, design local roles, and learn from peers from across the region.

Through the support of the IMLS grant, participants are eligible to receive an honorarium to offset travel expenses. The honorarium will be disbursed to individuals. Applicants based in Portland are encouraged to apply to the Portland workshop but will not be eligible for the honorarium.  
Eligibility

All library workers based in the United States are eligible to apply. Attendees can be from public, academic, government, or another type of library. 

You do not have to have past experience with civic data to attend. Curiosity, interest, and a willingness to participate are what we ask of attendees!

Civic Switchboard has planned multiple regional institutes to make attendance more accessible. While we expect many participants will choose to apply to the institute that is geographically closest to them, regional proximity is not a requirement of eligibility.

Participants must be able to attend both days of the Institute.

If we have more registrations than we have participant spaces, we will use the following criteria to make acceptance decisions:

  • Representation from different regional organizations: While more than one applicant from an institution can apply, we aim to have the greatest representation from different regional organizations at each institute.
  • Variety of library types and roles

Applicants who are not accepted for the Portland-based Institute are encouraged to apply for the online Institute, which will run in November 2024. Applications will open for the online Institute in July 2024.

Data Sharing
We may use your application responses to help our project team identify trends and learn about what is already happening between libraries and civic data intermediaries. We may share aggregated information from across all applications in public reports, but we won’t share any direct quotes from your application or identify your organization or city without receiving separate permission from you first.
