Fall 2019 ORFan Gene Project Post-Test
Thank you for participating in the ORFan Gene Project Assessment. Participation in this post-test is completely voluntary. Your individual score will be kept confidential, and will not be revealed to your instructor. Furthermore, your performance will not be used as part of your grade for the course in which this assessment is being administered. The ORFan Gene Project will use aggregate data from this assessment instrument in order to determine the effectiveness of our work as a whole, to make improvements going forward, and to publish our findings. The yeast ORF YER066W is an uncharacterized ORF encoding a protein of unknown function. In a BLAST search, it is discovered that the protein sequence of YER066W aligns to the Cdc4 protein sequence. In yeast, Cdc4p is required for both the G1/S and G2/M cell cycle phase transitions. Cdc4p mediates formation of a protein complex signaling degradation of cell cycle inhibitors. Using this information, write a short paragraph that includes the following: 1. State a hypothesis for a possible function of YER066W 2. Propose one experiment to test this hypothesis 3.
