what3words is an app for mobile devices.
It has been highlighted recently by an advert on TV in which a stranded canoeist was able to give a precise location to the Emergency Services.
what3words is not a substitute for map reading skills, including using grid references, to plan your route successfully, but would be useful in an emergency.
As with all apps on mobile devices, what3words depends on mobile signal and having battery life on your device.
The makers of what3words divided the world into 3 metre squares. They then gave each square a unique combination of three words. what3words can pinpoint locations, such as building entrances and send help exactly where it is needed in open spaces such as parks.
We have devised this quiz to help you practice using this method. You will need to either download the app or use the what3words website to complete the questions.
There are 100 multiple choice questions. These start with questions about our county of Northumberland, before expanding to the UK, Europe and finally Worldwide.
The questions are split into categories, such as sporting venues, places to eat and Scouting locations.
Some require straightforward answers, others are designed to make you use your problem solving skills too.
Every person who completes the quiz 100% correctly will receive an entry into a prize draw. There will be one winner drawn from all four sections, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. The prize will be a £20 voucher to spend on Northumberland County Scout merchandise. The prize draw will take place at 2000hrs on 31st January 2021 so make sure your entry is received before this for your chance to win.
Please remember to add your name and a contact phone number so that we can contact you if you win.
Any problems with completing this quiz, please contact your Section Leader who can contact Ian Woods (ACC Scouts) for assistance.
**UPDATE 13/01/2021** it has been highlighted that for two questions you get a different answer when using the app and the web version. This quiz was devised using the app only. If you notice this please make a note in the additional comments section at the end of the quiz. We will take these two answers into consideration when marking**
Good Luck,
Ian Woods (ACC Scouts)
