Since its inception, clothing has remained a contentious issue, used by dominant forces across cultures to cloak and shroud forms of minorities by coercive methods. Women’s clothing, which determined their ‘modesty,’ was prescribed by men—based on their interpretation of ancient texts, resulting in mandates and laws. This module will trace the social, political, and behavioural codes of the late Joseon period in the Korean peninsula through the lens of the hanbok, clothing that reflected East Confucian principles.
