Vamos al Museo
On the first Saturday of the month, the National Hispanic Cultural Center invites families to Vamos al Museo, an artist lead hands-on art experience. Our morning begins with inspiration in the art museum, looking at design, materials and construction. Back in the education building we will create our own art piece to take home. A great morning of art-making for children of all ages and families of all sizes!

Please pre-register by using this form.

We will meet in the Creative Classroom, located in the  Pete V. Domenici Education Building before heading over to the Museum.

Artist Martha Varoz-Ewing in her booth at Spanish Market
Saturday, December 2 10:30-Noon
Make Straw Applique Ornaments with artist Martha Ewing in celebration of our opening exhibit The Art of Christmas: New Mexico Style

Martha Vároz Ewing uses wheat, oats & barley straw in her work which she gathers from her brother’s wheat fields in Southern Colorado.  The straw is known as Poor Man’s Gold and the tin is “Poor Man’s Silver.  She combines the two mediums as she feels they compliment each other.  Martha notes that her art takes on a form of prayer which is offered to the Trinity and is symbolic in her designs as noted in patterns of three.  She was mentored by the late Paula Rodriguez who was responsible, along with her husband Eliseo,  for the revival of this dying art form in the 1930’s during the WPA project.

Martha is a native of Santa Fé and has been a participant in the traditional Spanish Market since 2004. She is an award winning artist and was awarded the top five awards at the traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe in 2005 which included:

 Best of Show
 People’s Choice
 Archbishop’s Award
 1st place in Straw Appliqué
& Museum Purchase Award.  (Spanish Colonial Arts Museum in Santa Fe, NM)
