The Michigan Council for Exceptional Children created the MCEC Foundation for Exceptional Children in 2001. This scholarship program is intended to provide support for educational/training opportunities when students are no longer eligible for special education (and Section 504) programs and services provided by public education (i.e., graduation or reaching 26 years of age). Awards can be granted up to $1,500 and would support anything from transportation, special equipment, tutoring, including tuition. These funds are intended to augment, not replace, funds available through other agencies.

Application Requirements

Must be a resident in a school district in the state of Michigan.

Must be a student who will exit from educational programs this year either because of graduation or reaching age 26.

Must be a student with a disability at the time of exiting his/her program. Provide verification of disability from the district’s Special Education Director (include most recent IEP) or 504 Coordinator. Please email to Cheryl Borowski at: caborowski@prodigy.net

An acceptance letter of proof of enrollment/registration in a postsecondary institution in the state of Michigan. Out-of-state institutions will only be considered only if there is no postsecondary institution in Michigan that offers the program(s) and/or accommodation(s) that the student needs.

Three letters of recommendation. These letters should address the applicant’s character, motivation for additional education, leadership skills, and/or community service efforts.

A written essay describing the following (may be written by a significantly involved other person). The essay must be no longer than two pages or no longer than 5 minutes recorded.

The essay should address all of the following:

• His/her career goals.

• How further education/training will help him/her achieve those goals.

• Volunteer (community service) activities and/or experiences that demonstrate leadership skills.

Why do you need assistance? Provide demonstration of a significant financial need - do not include tax forms.

How will you use the money? Provide in writing the specific amount of funding being requested and how the amount will be used to support or foster personal goals and his/her educational or training experience. This should include the manner in which the expenses will be documented.

Agree to submit a report describing the positive personal impact of the educational or training experience on your life after your first year.

Additional Information

Applications that are incomplete or do not meet the above requirements WILL NOT be considered. Applications must be submitted by May 22, 2020. Notifications will be mailed on June 15, 2020. All material received will be destroyed after one year.
