For two weeks, we sort what they leave behind (kitchenware, clothing, books) and redistribute the items to new students at the start of the next academic year to encourage them not to buy completely new possessions when they start university.
In May and June this year, our collections volunteers saved some 11.34 tonnes of items (equivalent to 128 t CO2e) at Edinburgh University alone.
The Freeshop is also a great opportunity for SHRUB to promote its different projects to the student population and involve new members and volunteers, so we will host a number of pop-up stalls to showcase our activities (circular economy workshop, basic bike checks and repairs, food sharing etc.)
