ADOPTION/FOSTER INFORMATION:
Thank you for your interest in adopting or fostering a dog with Key To Happiness Rescue. Please know that all of our dogs are in temporary care foster homes until adopted. We do NOT have a facility or location to visit.
The first thing we ask you to do is fill out our adoption/foster application. This does not obligate you to adopt from us or foster with us, nor does it guarantee that you will be able to adopt or foster the dog that you have applied for. This just gives us the information needed to start the process.
ALL of the information is required to process your application. Your application will be considered incomplete if any information is not included and we will move on to the next application to process. PLEASE READ EACH SECTION CAREFULLY.
If you have adopted from us before (or have filled out an application before), please email us before filling out another application --
KTHRadoptions@gmail.com . We can skip a lot of the steps if you have adopted/applied with us before!!
KTHR requires all companion animals in the home to be spayed or neutered AND up to date on all vaccines. It is Wisconsin law that all dogs have their rabies vaccine. Should you have indoor cats that are not vaccinated, we will speak with your veterinarian to understand the best way to move forward keeping in mind the health of your current pets, and the needs of a new dog. We work very hard on our part to help control the pet population and we do not adopt out to families that do not alter their dogs. Please contact us if you have a current pet that is not spayed or neutered and can not be due to old age or medical reasons.
As part of our adoption/foster process we do a background check, vet check, call personal references for applicants that do not have current pets or pets within the last 7 years, property ownership verification/landlord check, and a home visit. The purpose of the home visit is to verify what you stated in your application is accurate and to ensure that the home will be a safe environment for the dog you wish to adopt/foster. Home visits normally takes about 30 minutes depending on questions, etc...
After the entire process is complete, we will let you know if you are approved or not. We will then arrange a meet and greet with the dog's current foster family to meet the dog you are interested in and learn more about the dog's personality, routine and challenges. The foster family will also review the adopters expectations and help make a determination as to if the adoption would be the best fit.
We do not adopt out our dogs on a first come first served basis, all dogs are adopted out based on best fit for the dog and adopter. In some situations, you may be approved to adopt or foster but we may not feel that it is the right fit for the dog you have chosen. If this happens, we will explain the reasoning and help you find another dog that is a better fit for all involved. We feel strongly that there is a dog for every adopter!
Please remember that we are all volunteers and most of us have full-time jobs and families and we juggle it all and also help with the rescue. We try to get back to people in a timely manner but sometimes there are delays due to schedules and the interest in a particular dog.
Rescue adoption fees are $425 for dogs up to 5 years old, $275 over 5 years old and fees vary for our extra large breed dogs and senior dogs. Dogs over 6 months are altered prior to adoption and dogs under 6 months are the adopters responsibility to have altered at 6 months of age. All our dogs come microchipped and have age appropriate vaccines.
YOU MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT AND FOSTER WITH US.
