RE: symbolism for "Marigold"
Marigold is non-native to our region but grows in Oregon much like many of our contemplative practices. They protect the plants growing around them and have medicinal properties. Marigolds represent/symbolize both "light" and "dark" aspects of life, depending on cultural context. In Indian culture marigolds represent sun, brightness, positivity, upliftment, auspiciousness, sanctity, and celebration. In Mexican culture they are placed on Día de los Muertos altars, and relate to death, recognition of life's brevity, celebration of life, honoring ancestors, and sacred grief.
