Despite our name, we were not founded by the French. I know.. tre' scandalous! The French Revolution, however, did play a major role in the founding of Frenchtown, NJ. *Expert tip* Read all about it, and more of our quirky history, in out very own history book titled Frenchtown by Rick Epstein!
All the same, we enjoy French art, culture, lifestyle and fashion. As a cheeky spin off of our namesake, we celebrate Bastille Day - the national day of France! This event is celebrated on July 14th each year, and in France, it is formally called la Fête nationale (National Day) or Le Quatorze Juillet. The French National Day is the anniversary of Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790. Bastille Day is often celebrated with military parades, meals, dances, parties and fireworks. Frenchtown has honored this annual celebrations for over a decade now, and while we do it a little bit differently in Frenchtown, as we typically do all things, folks still seem to enjoy it... and they keep coming back.
