1-3 p.m.
Gregg Museum Main Lobby and Front Lawn

Come to the Gregg Museum of Art & Design for an educational afternoon where Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) students from NC State present research documenting the maintenance challenges of the iconic Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in Wilson, North Carolina.

Choose the session that fits your schedule—both sessions will offer the same educational content:

Session 1: 1-2 p.m.

  • 1-1:30 p.m. | ECE Student Project Presentations
Students will present their research projections, using a live TV feed from the Whirligig Park to illustrate how conservation challenges (like monitoring wear or predicting failures) directly inform their research and solutions.
  • 1:30-1:45 p.m. | Q&A Session
Inquire about student methods, findings, and the engineering principles applied to conversation.
  • 1:45-2 p.m. | Guided tour of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig by the Gregg Museum
A member of the Gregg Museum education team will lead attendees outside for a focused tour of Vollis Simpson’s whirligig, Crossroads, on the front lawn, connecting the presented research to the physical kinetic sculpture.

Session 2: 2-3 p.m.

  • 2-2:30 p.m. | (repeat of Session 1 Presentations)
  • 2:30-2:45 p.m. | (Q&A Session)
  • 2:45-3 p.m. | (repeat of Session 1 Guided tour)

Choose your session and see where art meets engineering research!
